The Next Generation Will Rock Cleveland!

Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland to unveil new Notes for Notes® Studio thanks to Turner Construction and the Hot Topic Foundation

Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland, which provides safe, fun places for youth after school at 15 locations, has partnered with national non-profit organization Notes for Notes, which designs, equips and staffs after-school recording studios, on its new Notes for Notes Studio. Built with funds and resources secured by Turner Construction Company and the Hot Topic Foundation, which has worked with Notes for Notes for the last seven years, the studio will provide one-of-a-kind opportunities to explore, create, and record music for free; expand the offerings in BGCC’s exemplary band program; and put young adults on a positive path.

The new studio, which is located in BGCC’s Broadway Club, 6114 Broadway Ave., Cleveland, will be officially opened at a 4 p.m. ceremony May 17.

The new Notes for Notes Studio is packed with guitars, drums, keyboards and synthesizers, and DJ gear and features a stage with lighting, podcasting stations, and full recording studio facilities. It will also feature a specially dedicated Mix Room in honor Audio Technica.. Open to all Boys & Girls Club members, the studio will be an epicenter for music exploration and creation. Over the past five years, more than 200 youth have been involved in the BGCC band program—most of whom had never picked up an instrument before joining the Club. In the studio, kids will be exposed to a variety of instruments and private and group instruction, and can track and mix their own music while learning about careers in the industry.

“We get to know our young people and understand their interests,” says Matt Bott, BGCC’s arts director. “Many of our youths expressed interest in a studio–and we listened. We are framing this out to be both an opportunity to explore a career and as a creative outlet, one in which we have Notes for Notes’ professionals on hand to help the youth throughout the entire process.”

One day a week, at-risk teens and adults working with BGCC’s Cleveland Peacemakers Alliance – an anti-crime initiative that uses mediation, gang interaction and conflict resolution to reduce street violence – will use the studio before Club hours. Peacemakers Alliance case workers will accompany the young adults and work with Notes for Notes staff to leverage the studio as an outlet to express themselves.

“Notes for Notes has had its eye on Cleveland for a long time. This is the city that birthed rock ‘n roll, and we aim to continue that tradition by fostering the next generation of musicians here,” says Philip Gilley, Notes for Notes’ CEO and co-founder. “We are honored to be partnering with the BGCC and their wonderful team that make such a tremendous difference in the lives of so many Cleveland youth. We are extremely grateful to the Hot Topic Foundation and Turner Construction for making this studio possible. We can’t wait for Cleveland to hear its talented youth!”

“Every day, we work to build the future of the communities we live in,” says Jason Jones, vice president and general manager of Turner’s Cleveland office. “This studio will be an incredible resource that Cleveland’s young adults can use to build their own futures. We’re very proud of this team of new hires who led this construction project.”

BGCC President Ron Soeder praised Notes for Notes for opening the new studio and applauded the efforts of Turner Construction, which raised $30,000 and brought on many in-kind donations for the construction and management of the project over a two-year period. “We are blessed to have amazing partners on this project,” Soeder said. “Our kids will benefit from the equipment and expertise provided by Notes for Notes, and Turner Construction’s funding – for this project and in terms of ongoing support – has been nothing short of transformational.”
