Yvonne Marshall, the intake specialist at our Broadway Club, has a special bond with one of the most significant places in the civil rights movement.
‘Candy,’ as she is called, grew up in Selma, Alabama. Both her father, the Rev. Chester Marshall, and sister, Louise Rudolph, took part in the March 7, 1965 voting rights march in which marchers – led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. -- were violently confronted by law enforcement personnel on the Edmund Pettus bridge. The day became known as Bloody Sunday.
“I am proud to be from Selma. Very proud,” says Candy, who was too young to participate in the march with her family members.
Although she moved to Cleveland at age 14, she recently checked Google Earth to see what had become of her neighborhood. She was surprised to find out the house was still there, although it is in poor condition. “1409 Green Street. Wow. That’s amazing that it is still there,” she says.
As we enter the final week of Black History Month, it is important to note that the confrontation at the Edmund Pettus bridge became a symbol of the momentous changes taking place across the nation. The march resumed on Sunday, March 21, with court protection; a federal judge weighed the right of mobility against the right to march and ruled in favor of the demonstrators. The march gained steam each day as the demonstrators walked east toward the Alabama capital. By the time they reached Montgomery, they were 25,000 strong.
